Irish 700s Challenges

The Irish 700s Challenges are a unique set of 9 standalone single-day hillwalking challenges. Each challenges focuses on a specific Irish mountain range containing at least 3 mountain summits higher than 700m (two of which must also be on the Slievemore list). Hillwalkers are invited to undertake our single-day Irish 700s Challenges each year during the Sport Hillwalking competition season. To earn a Certificate of Completion, the challenger must log visits to every summit on their chosen challenge's list while on location using the Peakhunter app. Single-day Irish 700s Challenges are only open to registered competitors who have submitted a Sport Hillwalking Entry Form before 30th June. All verified single-day challenge completions will count towards the participants' scores in the Irish Challenge Hillwalker of the Year competition. They can also count towards their scores in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships and other Specialist Award competitions.

Peakhunter is our official logging and score-keeping partner.

If a participant completes one of our Irish 700s Challenges in its entirety in 24 hours (midnight to midnight) or less during the Sport Hillwalking season, it is worth points equal to the combined point-score values of all that challenge's listed locations in the Irish Challenge Hillwalker of the Year competition. For example, logged visits to all 6 mountain summits in the Mourne Mountains range higher than 700m during a single 24-hour period is worth 121 points. Single-day completers can claim a Certificate of Completion once per 700s Challenge per year. To claim Irish Challenge Hillwalker of the Year competition points and a Certificate of Completion, a participant must submit a Hillwalking Challenge Completion Form (Single-Day Challenges) within one week of completing a challenge.

Please note that our range-specific 700s challenges should only be attempted by experienced hillwalkers who can navigate using a traditional magnetic compass and hardcopy map. For this reason, you can only claim certificates and points can for single-day mountain challenge completions if one of your Peakhunter log entries on the day contains a photograph of your hand holding a traditional magnetic compass and a relevant hardcopy medium-scale map (i.e. 1:20,000 to 1:50,000). This image is the minimum evidence of hillwalking competence we require. Certificates and points will not be issued without it. Relevant maps are listed on the
700s challenge pages on The Ireland Walking Guide website.

The Irish 700s Challenges also provide interesting charity-fundraising opportunities for hillwalkers.

All of our Sport Hillwalking initiatives are 100% free for you to take part in. However, please note that we do have significant operational costs which we cover on a voluntary basis ourselves. The long-term development strategy for High Point Ireland, Sport Hillwalking and our growing family of independent Irish information websites will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. To help us speed things along, we'd be most grateful if you would consider using the affiliate links we have set up on The Ireland Travel Guide website to buy your outdoor gear and book accommodation / transport online in the future. Using these links will not affect the price you pay at checkout. However, each purchase / booking you make could send a small commission our way at no extra cost to you. Make no mistake, this is certainly not a get-rich-quick effort, but rather a very slow drip-feed of pennies and cents to partially cover the time, effort and money we continue to invest in our range of independent projects. Thank you for your support.
