What is it?
Mountains & High Points Week is a celebration of Sport Hillwalking locations. It occurs each year over the seven days when the sun is highest in the Irish sky - the Summer Solstice. The Week is centred on Solstice day itself, and includes the three days before and the three days after.
The Saturday of Mountains & High Points Week also marks Sport Hillwalking Day - an official day to celebrate Sport Hillwalking, the competitive upland sport which was born right here in Ireland.
Mountains & High Points Week is part of our wider #JuneUplandWalk theme.
We invite individuals, walking guides, clubs, event organisers and local businesses to get involved by organising their own formal and informal visits to Sport Hillwalking locations throughout Ireland and to share their stories, photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #MountainsHighPointsWeek.
When is it?
Saturday 18th - Friday 24th June 2022
The Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere takes place at 10:13 a.m. (Irish time) on Tuesday 21st June 2022.
Mountains & High Points Week takes place in June on the week centred on the Summer Solstice, and includes the three days before and the three days after. In other words, Solstice day itself is always the 4th day of Mountains & High Points Week.
Where is it?
Mountains & High Points Week takes place all over Ireland. There are 355 Irish Sport Hillwalking locations. No matter where you are in Ireland, you are less than 50km from your closest mountain or High Point.
Please share your stories, photos and videos from Mountains & High Points Week on social media using the hashtag #MountainsHighPointsWeek.
Safety
If you are planning to visit any of the Sport Hillwalking locations, please be aware that Highpointeering, rambling, hill-walking, hiking, mountaineering, mountain running and cycling are risk sports. High Point Ireland, Kieron Gribbon (the website's author and founder of High Point Ireland) and Donard Media (the website's publisher) accept no responsibility for any injury, loss or inconvenience sustained by anyone using this website. Personal safety is entirely the participant's own responsibility.
Access
The inclusion of locations on the official list of Sport Hillwalking locations is based entirely on each location's ability to qualify as a mountain or High Point. It should not be assumed that access is permitted to any of these locations. High Point Ireland, Kieron Gribbon and Donard Media recommend that anyone planning to visit Sport Hillwalking locations should check for potential access restrictions and to request permission from the relevant landowner(s) in advance.
