The All-Ireland Hillwalking Provinces Championship

Does your province have what it takes to become an Irish hillwalking team champion? If so, we are delighted to offer you that chance. The All-Ireland Hillwalking Provinces Championship is the ultimate outdoor sports competition contested in the Irish uplands. It is free to enter and is open to all experienced hillwalkers.

Take part

For a chance to become a member of your province's Sport Hillwalking team, you must compete in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships as an individual (click here for participation instructions).

Find out when the current or upcoming championships are taking place by visiting our sports competition status page. The Sport Hillwalking season is scheduled to start on 1st March and end on 31st October each year.

Winner selection

The following process is used to decide all province team placings in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Provinces Championship:
  1. All submitted Sport Hillwalking Entry Forms are checked as we receive them between 1st February and 30th June.
  2. Based on the forms we receive, participants are sorted into the provinces they are representing.
  3. Each province represented by 2 or more registered point-scoring participants qualifies as a team in the Provinces Championship.
  4. Each competitor's overall individual score is tallied in early November (i.e. Rounds 1 - 8 combined).
  5. The 5 highest individual scores from each province are added together to become that province's official team score.
  6. If a province team has 2 - 4 members, each of the 1 - 3 empty slots equates to an individual score of zero.
  7. Provinces are placed in order according to their overall team score, from the highest-scoring province to the lowest.
  8. The highest-scoring province team is the Champion.
  9. We aim to announce a full set of results across all categories by mid-November.

Use our affiliate links

All of our Sport Hillwalking initiatives are 100% free for you to take part in. However, please note that we do have significant operational costs which we cover on a voluntary basis ourselves. The long-term development strategy for High Point Ireland, Sport Hillwalking and our growing family of independent Irish information websites will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. To help us speed things along, we'd be most grateful if you would consider using the affiliate links we have set up on The Ireland Travel Guide website to buy your outdoor gear and book accommodation online in the future. Using these links will not affect the price you pay at checkout. However, each purchase you make could send a small commission our way at no extra cost to you. Make no mistake, this is certainly not a get-rich-quick effort, but rather a very slow drip-feed of pennies and cents to partially cover the time, effort and money we continue to invest in our range of independent projects. Thank you in advance for your support.
